What’s the difference between regular topsoil and loam topsoil?

Regular topsoil is a screened version of what you’ve probably already got in your garden right now. It’s a mixture of rotted organic material such as leaves and dead insects and may include some clay sand and silt.

Loam topsoil isn’t a ‘type’ of topsoil but rather a term used to describe a topsoil blended with much lower levels of organic matter. Most commercially produced loam topsoil’s will have high levels of sand, silt and clay depending on the proposed use.

For example, if you wanted a topsoil that retained more water you might choose a clay-rich loam, or if you required a free-draining topsoil you may choose a loam with a higher sand content.
